Sisters Bookshop seeks Buyer

Tucked into a corner of Sweet Auburn Curb Market, is a bookstore, owned by the Culbreath sisters, Pam Culbreath and Caroline Walker.

Mounting family obligation and failing health led the sisters to hang a For Sale sign out front of the store. So far, she has not been able to attract a buyer for a “negotiable” asking price of $20,000.

The bookstore has a surprisingly eclectic selection of books for it size. Today, Sisters boasts special sections on African and Native American history, spirituality, literature, and history of Atlanta and the South. There are also piles of romance novels, cookbooks, self-help tomes, and children’s books

So, the price is right…the location right (inside a bustling market place near hospitals, GSU and local neighborhoods)… They just need the right person.

Manager’s Message

Small Business 101

Owning a small business is a wonderful way to make a living while doing something you love. It’s not for everyone. You seldom get off at 5 o’clock and head home to hang out with the family. You may leave at 5:00 PM, but make no mistake; you’re on call 24/7. It’s your baby.

You will get out of it as much as you put into it, both financial, as well as your effort. As a small business owner, you frequently have to fill multiple roles: Manager, bookkeeper, HR, sales, and janitorial.

If a pipe bursts, you will be the one who gets out of bed, calls the plumber and facilitates the cleanup. If your cook calls in sick, you may have to get in the kitchen.

Speaking of employees, you pay everyone before you pay yourself. Not only that, but if you have a bad month, you may have to skip a check. It’s not for the faint of heart.

On the other hand, it’s yours, you make the decisions. You decide what kind of product you want to produce. You set the level of customer service. If you’ve ever heard a fellow employee say, “What do I care, it’s not mine.” Now you know what that means. This business is yours. Surround yourself with people who feel the same way you do. Show them you take pride in what you do and reward them for the same.

Pam and her sister, Caroline had a dream to one day own a small bookstore. From selling at a table in 2009, expanding to a permanent space, to their move to the larger space, they struggled, as it grew.

Many of the small businesses located inside the market have gone on to open a second or third location in other parts of the city. They work harder than you can imagine. At the end of the day, you get out of your business what you put into it.

It’s your baby. Take care of it.
